Huge ARLA conference still set to go ahead despite coronavirus fears

The ARLA conference is still set to go ahead despite fears over coronavirus.

The event, which normally attracts many hundreds of delegates and exhibitors and is so large that it has to be held at ExCel, is scheduled for March 24.

It is due to be the 25th ARLA conference.

CEO David Cox said yesterday that a coronavirus plan has been put in place to mitigate the risks associated with large gatherings.

Reusable water bottles will be replaced by single-use plastic bottles to reduce the possibility of contamination, while individual hand sanitisers will be put in all delegate bags and on all counters in the exhibition hall.

Cox said that unfortunately the plan would increase the use of plastic, “which was something we were trying to reduce in order to improve the sustainability of the conference”.

He added: “There is also a contingency plan in place with ExCel should the global situation worsen over the coming weeks but as it stands today both we and ExCel are comfortable with the conference continuing as planned.”

The virus outbreak has led France to ban all major indoor events where over 5,000 people will be present, and to the postponement of the huge MPIM conference this month.

MPIM was cancelled just 24 hours after the organisers emailed to say it would go ahead.
