Top estate agent training tips

Charlotte Jeffrey-Campbell

Since launching The Able Agent during the pandemic, I have been collating feedback from estate and letting teams, agency owners and leading property industry individuals across the UK.

From this wealth of information, here is some insights and top tips for exceptional agent training.

Agents are looking for flexibility

Agents say that being able to study at their own pace was critical to their success. Whilst some fly through modules quickly, others like to revisit topics they have found more challenging, to really ‘get to grips’ with certain subjects. Having access to an online portal, with materials available to review and refresh at any time, enables them to make informed decisions on the pacing of their training.

Support is key to success

Our Level 3 Certificate in Property Advice and Practice (CePAP) course has a phenomenal success rate for attainment, as well as satisfaction. However, we’ve learnt that many staff studying for qualifications need guidance throughout their programme to ensure they accomplish their goals. This is especially true for those who haven’t undertaken formal education or studies for many years. When looking for a training programme, built-in support from training providers can play a pivotal role – ensuring agents are given the confidence and know-how about how best to study, utilise learning tools and overcome their fears.

Variety is the spice of agency life

Accessibility is crucial for engagement in any project, and so is information presented in a dynamic way. We know that people learn in different ways, but this has become ever more apparent the more time we spend training agents. Learning resources need to be available in different formats, so everyone has the opportunity to learn in a way that benefits them. There are those that love reading text and making written notes. Others appreciate video, as it gives them the option to listen, observe and absorb, while offering an alternative for those with dyslexia.

Transparency delivers tangible results

Feedback shows us that managers having transparent visibility of agents’ progress helps them support staff who fall behind with their studies. It also allows them to measure and have a tangible reference on the effect of training on their business. They are able to see the alignment between the modules completed and improvements in those areas of their business.

Knowledgeable professionals will defy market trends

Staff retention and attraction have been big issues in the industry for the last few years. However, agents have told us that training new starters and supporting existing staff to get qualified has reduced poor staff retention rates and ensured business targets are hit earlier.

Reading the trends, we can see the market slowing in the next few years. As we move closer to 2023, and with a shifting property market, agencies with staff who are skilled and confident in their knowledge of legislation, regulation and property management are the ones which will thrive. We suggest investing in qualifications and choosing business generation and law-focused courses that arm your agents with hard-hitting skills to benefit clients, your business and themselves.
