The Algarve has retained its position as the most popular destination in Rightmove’s latest analysis of overseas property searches by potential British buyers.
The Portuguese region topped the portal’s destination list for the second year running, followed by Paphos in Cyprus and Mallorca in Spain.
The Dordogne in France took fourth place, followed by the Spanish destinations of Alicante and the Costa del Sol.
Crete and Corfu in Greece were seventh and eighth respectively, while Murcia in Spain and Normandy in France completed the top ten.
A separate ranking of searches by country put Spain in first place, followed by France and Italy.
Cyprus was the fourth most searched country, with Portugal fifth and Greece sixth. Malta, Ireland, Bulgaria and Gibraltar made up the remainder of the top ten.
Spain also accounted for four of the ten entries in the destination ranking, with Mallorca, Alicante, the Costa del Sol and Murcia all featuring.
Nick Robertson, director of overseas at Rightmove, said: “Whether it’s a permanent move, a second home abroad or more casual summer browsing during the holidays, we’re seeing that many British home-hunters are still drawn to familiar favourite destinations.
“Sunshine, lifestyle, and the cost of living continue to attract many to consider an overseas move.”
Robertson added: “For those thinking seriously about buying abroad, summer can be a really key time to explore what different locations have to offer, from the type of homes available to practical considerations of moving overseas or buying a holiday home.
“We often hear from people that they head to Rightmove during their summer break away to see what a permanent move or more regular visit could look like.”
Ian Harris, NAEA Propertymark president, commented: “Demand for overseas property continues to reflect the appeal of warmer climates, lifestyle opportunities and, for some buyers, the prospect of a different pace of life.”
However, he also emphasised that, while destinations such as the Algarve, Mallorca and Paphos remain enduring favourites, prospective buyers should ensure their decision is based on careful planning rather than the attraction of a holiday setting alone.
He said: “Understanding local property laws, taxation, residency requirements and ongoing ownership costs is vital before making any commitment.
“Working with knowledgeable, regulated property professionals can help consumers make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes when purchasing overseas.”
