Coach driver awaits sentencing after guilty plea over death of estate agent

A coach driver has pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of an estate agent and her partner by driving dangerously in July last year.

Pauline Camplin, 50, pleaded guilty to the two charges at Canterbury Crown Court, where Judge Adele Williams watched an eight-second video of the tragic accident from the National Express coach’s CCTV.

It showed the vehicle – with passengers on board – veering over a white line on the A2050 on the outskirts of Canterbury.

It narrowly missed two cars before hitting a third, which then spun out of control and smashed into another.

Estate agent Rachel Francis, 38, who was manager of the Canterbury office of Ward & Partner, died from her injuries a week later and her 40-year-old partner, Bryan Webster, was killed instantly.

Defence barrister John Fitzgerald initially said that Camplin would plead guilty to the lesser charge of causing the deaths by careless driving.

However, Judge Williams ruled it was up to the Crown Prosecution Service whether it should accept the plea to the lesser charge.

After a 15-minute adjournment, Camplin returned to the dock and admitted the more serious charges.

She was remanded on bail until next month when she will be sentenced.

Rachel Francis had been with Ward & Partners since 2001, successfully building her career. At her death, the firm paid moving tribute to her integrity, commitment and ability to get the best out of people.
