Army officer-turned-agent plans Mont Blanc climb to raise funds for military veterans

A former army officer who now runs several Winkworth franchises is showing his support for military veterans by climbing Mont Blanc.

Nick Goble, franchisee of Winkworth Battersea, Clapham, Pimlico and Kennington, is to climb the highest mountain in Europe next month to raise funds and awareness for the mental health challenges faced by veterans today.

Having trained since November, he plans to take the challenging ‘Gonella Route’ from the Italian side of the mountain, climbing 15,777 feet, or 4,808m, over two to three days, and is expecting to reach the summit on June 17 or 18.

All funds raised will go towards mental health support for veterans from Goble’s former Queen’s Regiment.

Goble said: “In 2018, it was reported that over 71 British veterans tragically took their lives, including five brave veterans in one torrid week alone.

“These figures do vary as it’s difficult to truly record, but I think everyone can agree that if it were just one veteran it would be one too many.

“I did say about ten years ago that I would not be rattling the tin again asking for donations, but I now feel compelled to dust off the collection tin for a one-off and final fundraising event.

“The mental health challenge our brave veterans face today is immense and they need as much support as we can offer them.”
