Agent’s slip-up over years remaining on lease is subject of complaint to advertising watchdog

A complaint about an estate agent’s listing has been informally resolved by the Advertising Standards Authority.

The complaint was about a Greenslade Taylor Hunt listing for a flat in Yeovil, Somerset, which stated it was sold subject to contract, and that there were 69 years still left on the lease.

The complainant understood that the prospective buyer was no longer proceeding with the purchase, so the property was not “sold subject to contract”, and said that there were actually 63 years remaining on the lease.

An ASA spokesperson said: “We contacted the advertiser about the complaint who amended the number of years remaining on the lease that had appeared as 69 in error.

“However, they informed us the property was still under offer. Once we had seen evidence of this, provided by the advertiser, we concluded the statement ‘Sold STC’ was factually correct and not misleading.

“The complaint was therefore only partly upheld and was closed on an informal basis.”
