What makes a great website for an independent estate agent?

Estate agents Robinson Jackson have launched a new website – which is worth taking a look at.

It automatically re-sizes to the screen format, no matter what the device, and is also very full of video content.

The redesign has been delivered by Starberry, which was also responsible for the Daniel Cobb website, which won gold at last week’s Sunday Times and The Times Estate Agency of the Year awards.

I’m staggered that this should be newsworthy. I’m a fan of Robinson Jackson, but frankly any decent agent’s website should be cross-platform compatible (ie autoresize). And whilst the Christmas background video on the home page is really charming, the only other videos I could find were (presumably un-trackable) YouTube client testimonials. Where are the happy professional agents sharing their thoughts, opinions and passion for their work? Where are the home moving advice videos or interactive video FAQs? Come on chaps! BTW I love the way the people pics on the Daniel Cobb site toggle to show their personal interests.

      Agreed.

We are in the process of re-launching our website in January 2016 with videos being shot currently. Whilst I like the idea of testimonials I find they can always look staged and the ones on the RJ site are the same that have had for years so hardly current. The Daniel Cobb site however is far more like what we will be hoping to achieve. Less chest beating and more friendly.

There are some agents out there that have YouTube channels, but talking about why the colour of your board is purple (for example) is a bit… Well… Would you watch it to the end? The only agents I’ve noticed that does advice vids is an independent in Hertfordshire, Hawk & Chadwick – they have loads on there.

Agents are too stuck in the “corporate banker” type of world… Let’s face it, the general public put agents in the banker/traffic warden bracket for a reason – because that’s what a lot of people are still like, unfortunately! It’s a people business… Be a person!

Agree Richard. Thoughts, opinions and passion, beliefs, values and convictions. There is no quicker way to create affinity with potential vendors (local community as a whole).

It is not that new, WordPress has been around a while now.  I must agree though that there are some shocking agents websites out there.

I would take a little time in considering which properties and photos are chosen to feature on the home page if I were this company …..

R-J site looks very swish but I  personally do not like it. It seems to lack filters  to select accommodation, price, tightly defined geographic locations etc.  I personally like to have the flexibility of searches like the rightmove site.

Just tried the search facility and it says that they don’t have any matching properties within an area where they actually have a branch (!) It then goes on to list properties from the entire group. You would have thought that they would have checked functionally before going live.

Why would anyone wishing to buy a property search on an agents website, it is quicker to search ALL agents on Rightmove with a single search.

Online booking of viewings including time slot, clear list of ALL charges, opening hours etc are however required on any decent agent’s website.
