Row breaks out over agent’s advertising banner on busy road

wales

A large banner advertising a letting agent is at the centre of a safety row because it has been put on a private property on a busy road.

A local councillor, Peter May, is pictured with the banner in the background in the local newspaper story.

However, we cannot tell you who the letting agent is, or what the wording on the banner says, as the South Wales Evening Post has clearly gone to some lengths not to divulge this – presumably it is editorial policy not to give free advertising, but it does look pretty absurd to carry a story about an advertising hoarding and then not show it.

However, a nameless spokesperson for the unnamed letting company told the paper: “Our banner has been placed on our student property and is only there on a temporary basis over the next two weeks. It is not a permanent fixture.

“We are unaware of any restrictions regarding advertising on our own properties, and other estate agents in the area are also placing banners and advertisements outside their properties throughout the area.

“If you travel 100 yards down the road there is another agent advertising with a banner bigger than ours for the same purpose.

“There are agents carrying out the same practice throughout this area during this time of year.”

Swansea Council confirmed it had received complaints, while Cllr May said he is in touch with both planning enforcement and highways departments on behalf of residents he rather grandly calls his “constituents”.

However, the story has not had the quite the reaction that Cllr May might have expected.

One person accuses him of a photo opportunity; another says that the council itself has been plastering Swansea with large advertising banners; and a third points out that there are adverts on lots of roundabouts, which might also distract drivers – but which make the council money, which apparently makes it all right.

Who’s had difficulty in driving while reading highway signs for road accidents or forthcoming roadworks/diversions? By the look of it, the ad isn’t in small print. A councillor with a law for one and not for others?

Perhaps, as a local councillor, if he wanted to be taken more seriously, he should consider donning a shirt and tie for the photo rather than a hoodie?

    just saying…..
