Estate agents will close their branches across Wales this Friday as part of tougher coronavirus restrictions announced by the Welsh government yesterday.

Non-essential retail shops in Wales, including estate and letting agents, will close for just over two weeks as part of new lockdown restrictions introduced by the devolved administration.

First minister Mark Drakeford made the announcement yesterday in an attempt to contain the spread of Covid-19, with rates increasing across the UK over the past few weeks.

A further 18,804 confirmed cases of the virus was announced by the UK government yesterday. It brings the total number of cases in the UK to 741,212.

There have also been 80 new deaths, with 72 taking place in England, six in Northern Ireland, one in Wales and one in Scotland, the government confirmed.

The lockdown period in Wales will begin from 23 October and last until 9 November, which will encompass schools’ half-term holiday.

As well as non-essential retail, leisure and tourism businesses including restaurants and pubs will close.

So too will close-contact services such as hairdressers and beauticians while all gatherings indoors and outdoors with people from other households will be banned.

Drakeford said: “We all want to see an end to this pandemic and our lives returned to us. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a vaccine, which will allow us to do that.

“So this is our best chance of regaining control of the virus and avoiding a much-longer – and damaging – national lockdown.”
