Man charged with murder of police officer

An 18-year-old man will today (Thursday) appear in court charged with the murder of a police officer who died after being hit by a car.

Police have charged Clayton Williams, of Wheatland Lane, Wallasey with murder of PC Dave Phillips and attempting to wound his colleague.

He has also been charged with burglary and aggravated theft of a motor vehicle from outside an estate agent’s in Birkenhead, Liverpool.

Phillip Stuart, 30, of Mayfair Court, Oxton, has been charged with burglary and aggravated unauthorised taking of a car.

PC Phillips, 34 and a father-of-two, died after being hit by a vehicle which he and a colleague were trying to stop by puncturing its wheels with a special device at 1.30am on Monday.

Three women, aged 19, 34 and 59, and a 39-year old man, who were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have been released on bail.
