Robots will replace agents, predicts boffin

Estate agents could be replaced by robots, it has been claimed.

Other occupations at risk include typists and retail workers.

Altogether, nearly half (47%) of 702 occupations analysed are at risk of being replaced by robotic technology, according to Dr Carl Frey of Oxford University.

He told the BBC: “I was somewhat surprised when we arrived at that 47%.

“But the lines between man and machine are becoming increasingly blurred. We are seeing some jobs automated already, but not to the extent that we believe they will be over the next few decades.”

Should any estate agent be thinking of retraining, jobs that remain safe from robotic technology include acting, firefighting and being a priest.

Today, the UK is set to unveil its robotics strategy.

Apparently, we have something called the Technology Strategy Board, whose vision encompasses things like self-driving cars.

But self-selling houses? How would that work?

I'd love to see a Robotic z list celebrity (well they can't act)! Chase the council when searches take six weeks ( earlier article) be diplomatic to keep the piece between warring vendors in acrimonious house sales, explain retentions and organize quotes, go through Homebuyers reports, help fill in fixtures and fittings lists, keep lengthy house chains together when one of the chain has a wobble on dates no one else can do, the list is endless but finally, know who your hot applicants are and phone them before the house is typed let alone on the internet!

Dr Frey has fallen into the trap of thinking that Estate Agents sell property; they don't! Estate Agents sell homes. By ignoring the important pastoral element of Agency Dr. Frey has demonstrated that he really doesn't have a clue what he is talking about.

It may not be soon but robots WILL take over estate agency. Human agents will have to prepare for it.
Online Agents/"list on portal" agents are moving quickly to take over the current high street agency model whilst old school professionals like Pee Bee and others response is always "bring it on" (sorry chaps, but it is already well on- you are already behind the times).
We need to make a stand NOW against Robots taking our jobs. Can I suggest that Online Agents AND High ST. Agents join together, put our differences behind us and form the group MOARA – Mutual Organisation Against Robot Agents.
All right…..you think up a better name.

I agree they are trying Wilko, but with 20 years of designing systems to help in Agency I know the "Dalek's steps" that protect our industry from the sort of Robots Dr Frey is banging on about.
The battleground for agency is not robots but human operatives with artificial intelligence (literally) ; those Valuers who have no practical concept of numbers, maths, economics or the economy who rely on valuation algorithms for their survival.
You can defeat the human robots by making sure potential vendors ask one simple question; How did you arrive at that figure? The response most PI's and remote online agents have to give is 'I looked it up on the internet’
