Our sincere thanks to estate agent David Cantell, director of Cantell & Co in Richmond, south-west London, for his winning bid of £666 for the Julian O’Dell portrait.
The picture of Mick Jagger was auctioned last week on EYE to raise money for the cancer charity Macmillan.
It is a cause very dear to Julian’s heart, as his wife has cancer, and also to David’s, again for family reasons.
David lives just two doors away from Jagger’s ex-wife, Jerry Hall, and made his bid of £666 in a nod to Mick’s reputation as “the old devil”.
David said: “Macmillan is such a great cause, and one that I hold very close. The nurses looked after my mother and made her comfortable, when I did not think that was possible. I truly could not do the job that they do.
“I didn’t know my bid had won the auction until the day after it closed, because I placed it just before we went out on our firm’s Christmas lunch. But I am absolutely delighted.”
EYE has added our original opening bid of £50 to the total, bringing in a total of £716, which has been paid in via Julian’s Justgiving page, enabling Gift Aid to be added.
Julian said: “I am thrilled beyond words at the result of the auction.
“Thank you to Property Industry Eye for the idea and the support. What a brilliant set of readers you have. All the bids were much appreciated, with very special thanks to David Cantell who won the picture.
“What started as a hobby to pass time in dull hotel rooms when I’m away on business has now grown into a fantastic fundraising opportunity.
“I’ll keep it going for as long as I can. Macmillan Cancer Support is a cause close to my heart and a well deserving recipient of all proceeds raised.”
Our thanks also to all those who bid last week.
And now for one last challenge – would the continuing generosity of EYE be able to get this particular project to the £1,000 mark this side of Christmas? (If it’s any help, we understand that a Blondie portrait could be made available to a really keen purchaser, but of course the benchmark is now set.)
It would be fantastic if the new £1,000 target could happen, and we will of course celebrate your generosity.
Who knows which one of us could need this wonderful charity, one day?
