This year’s Chelsea Flower Show is under way with thousands of people passing through the floral gates for a look around the show gardens, flower pavilion and shopping stalls.
Anybody who has visited this week or watched highlights on TV may have noticed that Savills has once again returned to the show, having collaborated with award-winning British sculptor David Harber’s stand.
In previous years Savills sponsored the David Harber stand at the prestigious event, but 2022 is the first time the two brands have joined forces.
Renowned garden designer Emily Erlam – named one of House & Garden’s Top 50 garden designers – was commissioned to design the trade stand.
Richard Rees, Savills UK Managing Director, commented: “Having outside space continues to be a key requirement for our clients. It is important to be part of such a well-regarded event, which has inspired generations of gardeners, no matter how big or small their garden might be. Sculpture can form a central part to any outside space, which is why our continued partnership with the highly-acclaimed David Harber at Chelsea Flower Show is really exciting.”
Crispin Holborow, country director of the private office at Savills, added: “It is well known that people’s experiences of the pandemic drove property buyers to look for additional space, both internally and externally. Events such as RHS Chelsea Flower Show play an important part in inspiring both seasoned and aspiring gardeners in how to make the most of these external living spaces and art, in the form of a sculpture, can play an important role. This is why it is a very great pleasure to be back at Chelsea this year with David Harber, whose work perfectly captures how sculpture can marry together art and nature and create a central focal point in a garden, whether it is big or small.”
David Harber and his team are exhibiting a wide range of artworks from their classic collection of sculptures, including many of their newest designs including Sentinel, Iris Torus, Eclipse, Bite II, Teardrop Mantle and Turbine – an interior sculpture.
Bite II is an iteration of the popular Bite sculpture. Created from a Verdigris copper sphere, it features two concave curves of mirror-polished stainless steel, which create reflective surfaces that draw the viewer in and reflect the surroundings. The seamless transition from a perfect sphere into parabolic mirror inlays create a fascinating optical illusion in this unusual modern garden sculpture.
Meanwhile, Teardrop Mantle will also receive its first official UK preview, having launched earlier this spring. An elongated version of David Harber’s original Mantle artwork, the Teardrop Mantle is formed from hundreds of 316 marine grade, mirror polished steel ‘petals’. These petals are welded together in a painstakingly precise process to create a stunning piece, resembling a giant droplet of water in an ode to David’s love of nature and the outdoors. The interior of the sculpture can be customised in any paint colour, ensuring each Teardrop Mantle is unique.
The intricate shape and detailing of Teardrop Mantle directly inspired and influenced Erlam when designing the David Harber x Savills stand; inspired by the balance between void and mass spaces found within Teardrop Mantle, pathways will invite guests to explore the stand and discover planting and sculptures in a series of clusters that subtly mimics the shape and outline of the sculpture.
Some of the materials used within the garden are recycled from David Harber’s workshop, including a homemade terrazzo using offcuts of stone from the Dark Planet sculpture production process, and remnants from the Geminus sculpture have been used to create some beautiful bronze trellis panels.
Harber commented: “Every year the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is both daunting and exhilarating. I am pleased and relieved to be working with Savills, and safe in the knowledge that our garden is being created by the immensely talented Emily Erlam. It feels like a true collaboration of passion, craftsmanship and professionalism. The David Harber x Savills stand is a first for us in terms of collaboration and our shared passion for beautiful design will be embodied in the stunning garden space that we are creating.”
