Only ‘massive’ house building programme will solve crisis, say NAEA and ARLA

The NAEA and ARLA have told ministers that the only way Britain is going to get rents and house prices under control is by “a massive house building programme”.

The joint call comes at the end of the organisations’ response to a Government consultation on the housing market.

The response also says that to increase the supply of reasonably priced housing, finance, land, time and skill are needed.

It adds: “We need to stop thinking of housing policy in five-year election cycles and adopt a long-term approach to this critical issue.”

The response also warns against rent controls, saying that if restrictions on increases to rent were introduced, landlords would start new tenancies with higher rents to prevent losses later on.

The response says: “Higher rents would be essential to ensure mortgage payments and maintenance costs could be met.”

The NAEA and ARLA were responding to the House of Lords Select Committee on Economic Affairs Inquiry into the Economics of the UK housing market.

This is what those in the land & property professions have been saying for years whilst the politicians just think LANDLORD BASHING will either solve their problems and satisfy shelter and the like.
