Making a song and a dance about Section 21

A composer is recruiting singers for a pop-up singing ensemble called the Section 21 Choir.

Sergio Lopez Figueroa is looking for 20 singers to join the ‘complaint’ choir, which he set up three years ago and is named after a part of the Housing Act 1988 that allows landlords to claim possession of their property.

Choir members will be chosen not for their singing ability but for their renting horror stories, which Figueroa will turn into songs.

He is also hoping to recruit members with legal experience, and to petition the Government to increase protection for tenants.

Figueroa says his own rental experiences have been bad, and that after his landlord doubled his rent, he was forced to leave and take on a number of unsuitable flats.

It is not clear how many times the choir has performed, but in 2013 it sang at Herne Hill station, London, with the venue chosen because it had a piano.
