Welcome to “Landlords’ Barometer #15” where I review trending topics for landlords and property professionals.
The lion’s share of this week’s content comes from the Spring Property Investor Show, which took place in London on April 17 and 18.
We took the Property Tribes TV camera along to film some interviews:
1. “The property market is on pause” says MD of Shawbrook Bank
Stephen Johnson gives an overview of the property market and his thoughts on the effect the General Election will have on it.
2. Tenancy deposit protection news for landlords and lettings agents
Ben Beadle of TDS gives the latest TDP news for landlords and lettings agents, including the Deregulation Act.
He also says that there is still a lack of awareness about TDP with landlords, eight years on from the launch of TDP!
3. “More women should come forward in property” says HMO landlord
Wendy Whittaker-Large is a busy mum with four children but has still managed to build a successful property portfolio.
She is very keen to see more women come forward in the property sector and pays tribute to the skills women bring to the PRS!
4. Let’s celebrate the good relations between landlords and tenants!
Luke from the Portfolio Team at Endsleigh Insurance gives the low-down on Endsleigh’s better relations campaign and why landlords and agents should
celebrate the positive stories!
5. Being a letting agent is easy peasy money – get rich quick!
This discussion has recently resurfaced from the archive in the light of the General Election with thoughts that, if Labour get in, it’s going to be a lot harder for
letting agents to make a profit and some may go to the wall.
5. Date for your diaries – SAFEagent Awareness Week 2015
June 1–5 is this year’s SAFEagent Awareness campaign.
SAFEagent has planned a full week of activity to promote to consumers that they should only use SAFEagents who are part of Client Money Protection Schemes, and this will be supported across the U.K. by the SAFEagent community and all in the property sector who care about consumer protection.
The timing is auspicious because, from May 27 under the Consumer Rights Act, it will become a requirement for all agents to display details of fees and charges in their offices as well as stating whether or not they are part of a Client Money Protection Scheme and of which redress scheme they are a member.
SAFEagent Awareness Week will present an excellent opportunity to really focus consumers on what they should be looking for by way of financial protection from agents and what they should expect to see if they visit an agent’s office or website.
PropertyTribes.com will once again be supporting this initiative and believe we can all join this community supported campaign to make the private rented sector a safer place for consumers.
That’s all from me this time.
A big thank you to Nick and the team at Property Industry Eye for the delightful lunch in London this week for editorial contributors to the site.
