Here is proof – if needed – that neither eMoov nor easyProperty have the edge when it comes to online agents’ thirst for publicity.
eMoov’s Russell Quirk is never too far from the commentary box, while easyProperty had a ‘funeral’ march publicity stunt through London to mark the death of the high street agent.
However, House Network has now stepped up to the plate, offering sellers the chance to prove that their property is not occupied by ghosts.
The agent – which claims to be the UK’s largest online estate agent, although we suspect that Purplebricks might query that – is offering a “ghost-free certification service”.
It has teamed up with the Ghostfinder Paranormal Society, which will carry out checks for supernatural activity on request.
Apparently, it will mean that between now and Halloween, buyers can rest easy that their new home will not have anything ghostly about it, while sellers can prove they’re not hiding any skeletons.
However, we’re not going to get too uppity about it.
There is a (slightly) serious aspect to this, in that under CPRs, sellers are meant to declare anything adverse about their property.
The jury is still out on whether this includes ghosts – some experts think they should be declared, and others not on the basis that ghosts don’t exist.
Anyway, we rather like the video, chiefly because it looks as though someone’s mum was reluctantly volunteered into the making. It is also actually very funny.

I had a medieval property on the market some years ago where the owner told me that there were 3 ghosts in her house, one not particularly pleasant. Next door had been exorcised a month or so before. This was in the days of PMA. Trading Standards confirmed that ghosts were not a “prescribed matter” so there was no need to mention them, even though they might be an “immaterial misdescription”!
A few years ago I arranged a sale another property which had a well documented history of haunting; the buyer withdrew from the sale as she became more and more worried about what might happen when she moved in!
Ghosts definitely affect a buyer’s tranactional decision: they either don’t give a hoot (sic) or are genuinely concerned.

Personally I would love to meet a ghost but I don’t think I have the right mental disposition 😉
