Foxtons hit with bill of nearly £40,000 after failing to supply safety documents for ‘good quality’ rental home

Foxtons has been fined £35,000 and ordered to pay costs of £3,603 after failing to supply a local council with safety documentation.

Magistrates at Bow heard that the property in east London was believed to be in good condition.

However, over an 18-month period Foxtons had failed to provide Tower Hamlets council with documentation showing that gas, electrics and fire alarms had been checked.

Foxtons pleaded guilty and told the court it was ashamed of its failings.

Cllr Sirajul Islam, deputy mayor of the authority, said: “This case has sent a very strong message out to landlords and agents.”

The court said that the fine took into account the size of the company, its profits, and the ease with which it could have provided the information to the council.

Section 236(1) of the Housing Act 2004 requires a “person with a relevant interest in a property” to provide documents to a council for any purpose connected with its housing enforcement functions.

EYE has approached Foxtons for comment.

In a different prosecution a landlord has been told to pay almost £33,000 after being charge with 15 offences, of which 13 were under the Housing Act.

Russell Price, of Newmarket, Suffolk, was found guilty of all offences.

Interesting that councils can get £40k and the agent makes no commercial gain but online agents can make millions from misleading adverts and get find £000000

This article has nothing to do with online agents, but as always somebody with a chip on their shoulder has to put an online twist to it.
