Eye posting etiquette update – no hyperlinks, please

Thank you to our small – but growing daily – army of posters.

Your opinions are very welcome, and your points almost always well made.

However, can I please ask that you do not use hyperlinks to your own sites as your names when you do post.

Only a small handful of you are doing this but it is actually in contravention of our terms and conditions (see clause 6).

Our technical people will shortly be fixing it so that hyperlinks do not show live.

However, if you are registered with us using a hyperlink as your ‘handle’, you may prefer to re-register with a different name.

This can, but does not have to, be your own name, or it can be some other soubriquet (for example, PeeBee, Hound, Ajax and wilko).

As a reminder, you do have to register before you can comment. It is very quick and simple to do, and it is there to try and prevent spamming and posting up under assumed names, or with untraceable email addresses.

Thank you.

Ros

Could I suggest that anyone posting does not use "handles" or "pseudonym's".
Surely if this industry wants to be taken seriously or you yourself wants to be taken seriously – then use your own "real" name!

      Mr Baillie

It is not WHO the poster is – it is WHAT they post, surely?

For example, 'wilko' could be a Junior Neg – or just as easily the CEO of a multi-branch independent.

If they post sense – then it should be absorbed. If they post cr@p – then treat it as you would any other cr@p on the street and steer away from it.

I take ALL of the posters Ros mentioned above VERY seriously indeed – along with many, many other 'anonymous' posters.

And sorry if the validity of what I say is diluted because you don't know my 'real' name.

If I said it was John Jones – would THAT make a difference? Or would it need to be say, Trevor Kent PPNAEA in order to swing some weight (NO pun or insult intended, Big T – I have a LEG that weighs more than you…! 😉 )?

Blimey PeeBee, I didn't know you were really the front man of The Oysterband!
(Not a comment to be taken VERY seriously of course 😉 )

Having emailed the programme in response to an item about HIP's a few years back, I was described by Eddie Meyer on PM as 'frustrated of Ely' If anonymity is good enough for the BBC it's good enough for me!

Can the system be changed for posters to use their real names.

Mr Mealham – please note my comment above to Mr Baillie. I would ask the same questions of you.

'Real' names? You have no guarantee whatsoever that ANY given name is 'real'.

How's about DNA profiles – just for a smidgen of added validity?

People can choose whether to use their own names or some other 'handle', as is the widely accepted convention. However, please no more hyperlinks back to your own sites. That really isn't etiquette.

Hi Ros, whilst your tech folks are at it, is it possible to have something that flags up recent items that are attracting a lot of interest, like this one that is still attracting comments, http://www.propertyindustryeye.com/forty-years-estate-agency-hasnt-really-changed-says-supplier/ but has slipped to the second page of the archive.

Keep up the good work 🙂

Sorry Hound, rude of me not to reply earlier – yes, this issue is one that we are trying to address, as I am aware that sometimes stories either get a life of their own after they have dropped off the front page, or continue to attract comments. So, we are on the case – also looking at a number of other improvements to our site, and please keep the suggestions coming.

It is perfectly possible to post well thought out and constructive comments that deserve to be taken seriously using a pseudonym , but if any user of this site wishes to maintain a degree of anonymity, given that this is a public access site and not a closed forum, I think that is quite acceptable.

My name is actually, technically a pseudonym. Strange, but true.

I agree with Pee Bees comments regarding names.
It would be extremely difficult for me to post comments on this growing forum under my real name. Sometimes the views expressed are my own and sometimes that of my company. It would be easy for persons, if they knew which company I worked for (easily found out if I used my real name) then it would be possible for people to quote me on behalf of the company, even if they were just my own thoughts on an issue.
It is, however extremely valuable to me to read other persons thoughts and arguments about issues that Ros. writes about and I have often changed or softened / hardened my views on industry related topics based on what my fellow agents write here.
I do not want people to think I'm hiding behind my pen name and am quite happy to meet you all when Ros throws the first PIE Christmas Party in December.

      HEAR, HEAR, wilko!

EVERY comment I make is mine. I have no agenda; no particular axe to grind with an individual or business – I simply base my comments on my belief and opinion.

And it is a set of beliefs, and opinions. based upon working with and for buyers and sellers of homes over nearer four decades than three.

Having spent quite a chunk of it NOT as an Estate Agent, I have seen from the other side of the fence. Now, being for want of a better phrase poacher-***-gamekeeper, I still maintain my original stance. If anything I am now more certain of it than in the early days.

And I'll keep banging the same drum until someone proves to me, for once and for all, that it is the wrong drum.

THAT will be when I realise I'm in the wrong vocation – and immediately do something to change that situation.
