Creeping up: Is OnTheMarket now on target?

There now look to be 6,069 branches with membership of OnTheMarket – 29 more than last month.

The monthly calculation is by one of our members, “smile please”,  and appears on the ARENA section of our site.

OTM has not released figures for some time.

However, OTM is focusing on a figure of 7,500 branches, a mixture of contracted branches and those that have signed letters of intent once overall support reaches that number of overall support.

The new figures come as financial website Motley Fool has hailed Rightmove’s market share and “insanely high margins”. The piece says that “Rightmove’s first mover advantage and 77% market share”  have left OnTheMarket in the dust and tht Rightmove has little chance of being dislodged. Analyst Ian Pierce says that Rightmove “will continue to be a persistent thorn in the side of traditional estate agents” and is popular with its shareholders.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the message should have read…

“So at this rate they are still set to be seen as [the] third [largest portal] by a significant margin in 2019. Exceptional work!”

I had genuinely forgotten OTM existed until I saw reappear on Eye again this morning!

    Ooops..?

Also, it looks like OTM has a very slight bias towards the South. Can anyone explain why OTM would be getting more traction there than in the North? Genuine question.

One can only deduce that the staff they poached from the other portals with big pay increases were based in these areas – and they don’t like to stray too far from home so they can be back in time to email recruitment consultants.

Also, agents in the north typically care not one jot about helping Saville’s & Knight Frank protect their business model.

houses are cheaper, so all our marketing money has to be working for us.

50% of the agents here in my local area aren’t on 2 portals, they are only on RM, OTM isn’t needed and there are very few corporates up our patch too, mainly 1-2 branch independents.

It just doesn’t appeal to us to throw money away either.  Because house prices are lower we get less online agents too as their fees are actually higher than most local agents (who charge between £500-£999)

Are we still talking about these jokers? To be fair to them, they are growing their branch numbers in the Phillipines at the moment so it’s not fair to focus on the uk only.

I hear that they are offering every Filipino who signs up at £50 per month a free Traditional High Street Agent to use as a housekeeper for 5 years. I’d go for it.

    On target for what? Obscurity?

Letters of intent. Oh dear oh dear.

Still, good to see an OTM story again. Nice diversion from real life.

Err hang on, they are now saying the target is 7500 with the letters of intent ****** hell when does the BS stop! however a gain of 29 to 6069 and we dont know how many letters of intent there are because otm doesn’t comment on their members (even though they aren’t, yet or ever) but I’m guessing we can assume there aren’t even a 1000 so they are quite a long way from 7500 whichever way they want to count it means that its gonna be some time yet before they hit number two in the charts then or will they start to include the letters to agents that they haven’t received a reply from as not sures or undecideds!

Wow the haters are out in force today arent they. The rest of us quietly get on with the job in hand whilst happy that there are those that are prepared to stick their necks out for the good of our industry…. developing and supporting the only hope we have of not being slaves to an out of control profit machine.

    Report
  9. AgentProvocateur

Crikey – what a bunch of cycnics. Those standing around at the edges chucking brickbats should remember that the reason they can negotiate with other portals is precisely BECAUSE of OTM. If those who currently rejoice in taking a commercial advantage whilst early adopters take a hit would care to have a look into a non OTM future where we are once again beholden to these money machines they may not like what they see and will only have themselves to blame. You may or may not like the way OTM are going about their business, but appealing to potential buyers, getting the name known, attracting more offices whilst fighting a wall of money and [mostly false] stats from RM and ZPLA on the budget available is a HUGE ask – made all the more difficult when fighting cynics within the industry. Rather than “having a laugh” at the expense of those trying to pull back on these out of control express trains – why not join and try and help from within?

Well said AgentProvocateur, when did we become a nation of ‘whatever you do I hope it fails’ ? Get behind it and give it a chance instead of getting in the way of it and helping RM increase it’s profit margins.

The very reason AM was set up was to take control of our advertising and costs. I hope that OTM does continue to grow but whatever happens I won’t be joining the Statler and Waldorf brigade over it.

danny, digital expert and Harry N always take time out their busy, busy working days to come on here with their magnificently constructive contributions that so enthrall the EYE readership. Honestly, they know SO much about how OTM should be run that it is simply amazing they haven’t been co-opted onto the board.

Anyway, just to get them a bit more frothy mouthed, I’d remind them that the Chinese water torture that is OTMs progress shows no sign of abating.

However you look at it you are only going to get a true idea of how OTM are doing after the initial 12 months, has they didn’t start contracts for many until February this year it will be February next year when you can see who is still with them.
