Council abandons selective licensing debate after advice from legal team

A debate on whether to introduce selective licensing had to be abandoned by a local authority after about half of its councillors had to leave the chamber.

Portsmouth Council’s legal team had advised those councillors who are either landlords or tenants about a possible conflict of interest.

Among those who left the chamber was the councillor who had seconded the motion.

The remaining 19 councillors in the chamber voted against a new seconder, meaning that the motion could not be heard.

Labour Cllr Cal Corkery who proposed the motion said the party would look at other options to get the matter to debate.

EYE has not heard of other councils having to abandon moves to introduce selective licensing because of members’ own interests. Whether this sets a precedent remains to be seen.
