Nicholas Faulkner, the owner of leasehold property management business Alexander Faulkner Partnership Ltd, which acquired Century 21 UK from the SDL Group in April, has revealed major expansion plans for the global estate agency brand in this country.
Since the property management group’s acquisition of the UK master franchise for the Century 21 brand, which went under the radar last month, Faulkner has pressed forward with his plans to expand the Century 21 UK brand, its presence in the UK and to support the offices to scale in both lettings and sales.
Currently, Century 21, which is one of the world’s largest networks of estate agents, with around 10,500 offices and 125,000 sales professionals spanning 86 countries worldwide, has a network of 41 agents in the UK. But Faulkner wants to significantly increase that number over the next five years.
Faulkner told EYE: “We wish to grow the network to over 100 Century 21 UK offices across the country within five years.
“We see huge synergy between Alexander Faulkner Partnership and Century 21 UK which will assist in our growth plans, particularly for Century 21 UK as Alexander Faulkner Partnership can provide introductions to thousands of properties to sale and to let. We are delighted to have the core team on board and will build on their strengths as we expand.”
Faulkner has no previous experience in estate agency, but as a master franchisor, he says that does not matter.
He commented: “I see our role as running a franchise opportunity with a world-leading brand to give entrepreneurial people the chance to run their own businesses – we are not running estate agencies.
“The existing core team at Century 21 UK have a strong agency background which complements my experience in business and property. I believe this is a winning combination to support our offices to grow their businesses.”
Faulkner said he was unable to disclose the financial details of the transaction, but he did confirm to EYE that he was, as far as he understands, the only person offered the opportunity to acquire the UK master franchise, and that he was not aware “of any other parties involved”.
“When the opportunity arose I couldn’t say no,” he added.
Century 21 have been plugging away in the UK since about 2005, and every so often someone else gives it a go. It should be fairly clear by now that neither the UK public or UK estate agents appear to be even remotely interested in it.

I worked as a franchise sales person for this lot in 1990.
It did not work then it will never work.
