Bosses asked to lend rental deposit money interest-free to employees

A scheme whereby employers are encouraged to offer interest-free loans to tenants who need money for a rental deposit is to be rolled out nationally.

The scheme has been running until now in London, but its expansion across the country is set to be announced today.

Housing minister Brandon Lewis, deputy London mayor for housing Richard Blakeway, and Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb are expected to announce details.

The scheme is similar to the season ticket loan programme, which is already offered by many employers to help commuters pay for their travel costs.

Repayment is via salary deductions.
