Ban on boards in historic city is extended for another ten years

A ban on boards which has already lasted 27 years is to be extended by a further ten.

For Sale and To Let boards have been banned in the conservation area of Bath – which covers about two-thirds of the city – since 1989.

With the current ban expiring on December 15, Bath & North East Somerset Council has successfully applied for the extension.

An inspector examined the application on behalf of the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government and came down on the side of the council.

The inspector ruled that allowing boards within the conservation area would have a harmful effect on the special architecture and character of buildings in the city centre and on the character and appearance of the wider Bath area.

The inspector said that even a single board could harm the appearance and feel of the conservation area.

The council has written to all estate agents operating in the city about the ongoing ban.

Liz Richardson, cabinet member for homes and planning, said: “The visual qualities of the conservation area are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike, and the renewal of the direction means that buildings will be kept free from inappropriate signage.”
