Auctioneer makes explosive find at house

A member of staff of Somerset estate agents and auctioneers Cooper and Tanner made a surprise find during a house clearance – a grenade.

They found it behind a wardrobe at a farmhouse in Henton, near Wells.

The furniture was being prepared for auction.

Jonathan Gudge, of Cooper and Tanner, said: “I reported the grenade to the police after it was found.

“They then handled the matter until the explosive ordnance disposal team arrived.

“It wasn’t quite what we expected to find in the farmhouse while clearing it and we were concerned that it would go off, harming people and damaging the building.

“It could have been a life or death situation for the person who discovered it.”

Police cleared a 100-metre area around the farmhouse and a bomb disposal squad carried out a controlled explosion in a nearby field.
