Another agent reported to advertising watchdog over display of letting fees

Another complaint about the way an agent shows its letting fees has been made to the Advertising Standards Authority.

This time, the complaint was informally resolved. It follows last week’s report that Hamptons International had been told to make its fees clearer.

The latest complaint was about Jigsaws, London, and a listing on Rightmove.

Text at the top of the page stated “£546 pcm” above a hyperlink titled ‘Fees Apply’.

Further down the page text stated “Subject to an additional £50 per month to cover all bills, internet, council tax!”

A spokesperson for the ASA said: “The complainant challenged whether the non-optional additional £50 monthly fee was presented clearly. We also noted the advertiser appeared to charge an admin fee.

“We approached the advertiser about the concerns that had been raised and they gave their assurance they would amend all applicable advertising so that quoted prices included non-optional fees that apply to all customers.”

These are not fees, they are contributions towards utility costs.

Prospective tenants base their search price to exclude these costs, we could be pricing the property above the next R/Z/OTM pricing bracket by including these utility costs and will therefore miss out on enquirers that otherwise would find the property is affordable.
