There are still close to 20,000 property industry professionals, including estate agents, still relying on the job protection scheme, according to the latest government statistics.
Provisional figures for April show that the number of employments on furlough in the real estate sector decreased to 19,400.
Overall, across all sectors there are 3.4 million employments still on furlough, down from a peak of 5.1 million in January.
Since the start of the scheme, which pays up to 80% of salaries to those who are unable to work due to lockdown, a cumulative total of 11.5 million jobs have been supported by the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme at various times. This is across all claims submitted to HMRC by 14 May 2021. Click here for more information.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak said: “Today’s data is another welcome sign that our Plan for Jobs is working and that the route we have taken is the right one.
“These figures show the scheme is naturally winding down as people get back to work and take advantage of the opportunities out there in the jobs market.”
One year on: Is there still a need for furlough in the estate agency sector?
Wow! out of about 55,000 that is a lot of people who haven’t been needed in the busiest market I can recall since Spring 1988.

Looks like EAT and PIE have mis-read the stats.
19,400 is the number of Employers furloughing staff at 31/3/2021.
Without knowing exactly what is included in the “Real estate” sector the total of Employments on furlough of 58,100 is fairly meaningless.
The take-up rate of 13% suggests the sector employs nearly 500,000 people.
