Sources have told EYE that the Propertymark board has voted to not allow ARLA propertymark CEO, David Cox, to stand for the new role of head of the joint NAEA/ARLA Propertymark organisation when Mark Hayward (NAEA CEO) retires later this year.
We understand that as a consequence David Cox will leave the organisation in the very near future.
Cox joined ARLA in 2014.
Asked to confirm or deny the circumstances a Propertymark spokesperson said: “We don’t comment on speculation.”
We will bring you further information as this breaking story unfolds.
If true, it will not be the first time that controversy has attended the organisation in respect of recruitment to a role.
In 2017, Chris Wood had his application to be vice-president of NAEA blocked.
Wood, subsequently tried – but failed – to have the vice-presidential election halted, claiming that the “pre-selection process” was unconstitutional.
Chris Wood mounts bid to get NAEA election and AGM overturned
This is a shocker. He would have been perfect for the role. I first met David years ago while he was still with the NLA and have always found him a very knowledgeable, approachable person. He isn’t in the least stiff and starchy as many in ARLA/NAEA are. Will have to reconsider our company membership of Propertymark if he leaves. Will be watching keenly to see where he goes next.

The Propertymark Board must be out of their minds if this is true. David has been outstanding especially during this awful time and feel he would be the perfect person for the joint role. It would be such a loss to all members if he were to leave.

I couldn’t agree with the first two posts above more; David is a great ambassador for our industry…knowledgable, approachable, down to earth and enthusiastic…we need a lot more like him.

This is perplexing to hear. I have always found David extremely approachable, knowledgeable and a really excellent ambassador for ARLA and our industry as a whole.
Under his stewardship, David has guided the ARLA annual conference to new heights and created an excellent platform for knowledge, learning, and industry insights.
David will always have our full support at whatever he does. He’s an industry shining star.

Well that’s all landlords need then Warwick
(Under his stewardship, David has guided the ARLA annual conference to new heights and created an excellent platform for knowledge, learning, and industry insights. oh! and a shining star) What vacuous waffle!!
All these people are useless and don’t support landlords dreadful issues, S24 – losing the right to evict – not being paid direct – continual attacks form all quarters. But hey, running a back slapping preening conference beats being unpopular whilst dealing with the issues we face.
All these cash collecting excuses for landlord bodies are useless to landlords.
He’ll just as likely be looking for a job in shelter soon, they have lots of cash!

I think “ad hominen” comments are more waffle as they don’t add any value to the discussion. It also reminds me of the kind of narrative spouted by rival landlord associations to the NRLA who think they can do better – making personal attacks rather than offering alternatives. Also, notable that you targeted me “Warwick” when every other person on this thread has been supportive of David.BTW – the ARLA conference is important on two counts: it provides learning and guidance for agents (good for landlords and tenants) and it showcases the professionalism of the sector to the outside world.

Absolutely spot on JMoo31.
‘Vacuous’ being the most appropriate description of its former poster boy, much like ARLA. They haven’t managed to halt anything of importance in regards to the legislative march against the Private Rented Sector. The ARLA qualification drives professionalism and standards but we dropped the affiliation with them years ago as we found that ARLA was all about backslapping and self-praising.
Whenever I met David Cox at a meeting it seemed that he spent his time reeling off his amazing list of connections in the political world and telling everybody what a great influencer he was. Some good it did for the industry!
Low grade politicians end up in organisations like Shelter, however, Cox is a bit too Tory for them!

Strange that. Whenever I met David Cox at meetings he was always very helpful and informative. I never once heard him bragging about anything, but being fair, he does have a lot to brag about. He has achieved much within ARLA and given it a friendly face, many more agents have joined as a result. I’m afraid your comments about them not ‘halting anything of importance’ is hardly fair when they had the headwinds of Shelter and Generation Rent pushing against them. The public clearly saw these as ‘poor tenant vs rich fat cat landlord’ battles and the current Government, desperate to win over the Labour voters were always going to side with them, no matter the cost to their traditional voters. Anyway, Propertymark represent Agents, not landlords. Where were the NLA/RLA/NRLA when we needed them?

You are aware he’s head of ARLA (Association for Residential Letting Agents) and not the NRLA which represents Landlords?

A very sad day for the industry if this is true. He would be perfect for the job – David is outstanding as a beacon of light and a fountain of knowledge to guide us all through such a huge change in legislation and change in the industry. He is a good chap and he absolutely deserves this position.

Oops. my mistake.
As per today’s PIE article – headcount increased from 55 to 61.
No response from PM regarding drop in income other than on a like for like basis it has increased?
Grant Thornton would/should have advised that PM re-draft 2018 accounts so that they were comparable – instead it looks like a dog’s dinner !

The reorganisation of NAEA/ARLA into Propertymark was overdue and many of the changes made have benefited the organisation. However, the fact that Board members can now be elected without having had proven experience within NAEA/NAVA/ARLA and some have used their membership of other professional bodies to get to the top via the back door could be the downfall of the whole of Propertymark within the next few years. I sincerely hope this leak is wrong.

Sincerely hope that this is untrue and that David is given the opportunity to continue and extend to Propertymark NAEA members all the fantastic work he has done in raising industry standards, the Propertymark ARLA profile as a credible and authorititive trade body and its member agents as the ‘go to’ industry professionals.

I thought this was a membership organisation for agents, shouldn’t the choice of Chairman be down to its members?

You are quite frightfully rude.
You do understand that being so rude has a habit of completely invalidating anything you might legitimately have to say.
Other than to castigate you for your arrogance I have decided to ignore you from this point on.
