Here’s an interesting list: the 50 coolest people in UK technology published by Business Insider.
Coming in at 30 is Rightmove’s boss Nick McKittrick, who helped start up the company in 2000 and became CEO last year after Ed Williams retired.
That sounds pretty cool, until you get to the number one spot – occupied by none other than Alex Chesterman, who founded Zoopla in 2007.
It makes the point that Zoopla “rose to prominence by acquiring almost all of its competitors. In five years, it bought 11 competitors, leaving Rightmove as the only rival. In June 2014, Zoopla had its IPO, and the company was valued at £919m.”
By contrast, Rightmove does not ever seem to have bought anything much – apart from its own shares – but has a market capitalisation of more than £2bn.
But never mind.
It all begs the question – just how cool is Ian Springett?
PS. Doug Monro is placed at number 34. He was formerly Zoopla’s chief operating officer and managing director of Gumtree, but in 2011 founded Adzuna, a search engine for jobs, cars and homes.
There are a lot of men on the list, an awful lot of stubble and barely a tie in sight.
