On 23 June 2018, twelve members of a Thai junior football team, The Wild Boars, and their coach, became trapped by rising flood water in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave system in Thailand.
What should have been a fun excursion turned into an 18-day ordeal that became the subject of an international search and rescue operation that transfixed the world.
Agents who attend the EA Masters event on 21st September will meet John Volanthen, an IT consultant who dives as a hobby and conducts cave rescues as a volunteer and who answered the call and played a leading role in the operation, which resulted in the successful extraction of all thirteen trapped souls.
Sadly, two of the Thai Navy Seals involved in the rescue died. One at the time from asphyxiation and another a year later from a blood infection contracted during the operation.
The rescue mission is the subject of a National Geographic documentary, The Rescue, which received a Bafta nomination in 2021, and a Netflix series Thai Cave Rescue which will premiere for audiences worldwide the day after EA Masters (September 22nd 2022).
Ron Howard and MGM have also this week announced the theatrical debut of, “Thirteen Lives”, a new film dramatizing the story, which hit theaters on Friday, July 29th and is also available for streaming globally on Prime Video starting August 5th. Hollywood actor Colin Farrell plays the part of John Volanthen.
The audience at EA Masters will hear the remarkable story first hand from real-life hero John, whose superpowers of perseverance, leadership and teamwork in pursuit of a common cause is sure to inspire.
