A fund started by an estate agent who was killed in a road crash has raised £60,000 for a children’s charity since his death in September.
Mark Davey, 33, who was a director at Indigo Residential in Luton, had survived cancer as a child. At the age of 30 he set up a fundraising page for Starlight, which grants wishes to seriously sick and terminally ill children.
At the time of his death he had raised £8,000. Since then, the figure has risen to over £68,000 – more than double his original aim of raising £30,000.
An inquest last week found that Mark had died while racing his car, an Audi R8, against a Porsche 911. Both cars reached 80mph. The driver of the Porsche, who managed to negotiate the roundabout where Mark’s car crashed, did not stop and has never been traced.
Bedfordshire coroner Tom Osborne said: “The message from this inquest should be that speed doesn’t just result in points or a lost licence or a written off car, loss of job or prison … it results in death.”
After the inquest, Mark’s father Chris said he hoped his son’s death would act as a warning to those tempted to speed.
“We just do not realise our vulnerability,” he said.
“If it makes one person not chase another car, then my son’s life has not been in vain.”
He said he still hoped the Porsche driver would be identified.
A very popular figure, Mark played rugby for Luton.
At the time of his death, Indigo said on its website: “We need to help Mark achieve his dream of raising £30,000 for his chosen charity Starlight.
“It was very important to him that he gave something back, for the help they gave him when he was a child.
“Mark’s parents Chris & Denise, and his sister Sarah, have asked for donations to go to Starlight instead of flowers at the funeral please. Thanks.”
The fundraising page is still open – and is very touching to read.
