Channel 4’s new property show, Selling Super Houses, aired last night, with eight hopefuls competing for a job as an estate agent.
The aspiring estate agents are hoping to secure what is described as ‘job of a lifetime’, showcasing and selling super prime properties for Paul Kemsley, who takes on the Lord Sugar (The Apprentice) role, at his exclusive independent agency.
Kemsley in the show tells the contestants that “he wants everyone to win” because “if they make money, he makes money”.
In their first challenge, the hopefuls hosted an open house event at one of the agency’s most exclusive properties, worth £20m. Who rose to the challenge, and did any of them secure a sale? You can catch up on All 4.
It is revealed in a preview for the next episode that the second task will involve hosting a house tour of Boy George’s Gothic Hampstead mansion, with the musician himself on hand to do the judging.
Lots of hair gel and lip fillers.

I thought that “PK” came across as a kind gentleman but I wish that television companies would stop making these cheap programmes that do not show the industry in any great light. I know that the saying goes “any PR is good PR” but if I was looking to use a property company to assist me then having watched the programme then I certainly wouldn’t want to use this firm. Potential spoiler alert – I see that there is a fanfare about Boy George putting his house on the market with them in the next episode. It clearly didnt go well according to press reports today about his finances. What is needed is a programme showing how hard good experienced agents work on behalf of their clients in selling what is usually the persons largest financial asset and dealing with the trials, tribulations and emotions of each transaction and the benefit a good agent can bring both financially and emotionally. Not a platform for fame hungry wannabees!

It really is dumbing down the profession. Can you imagine a similar series being made about pilots or heart surgeons?

No it is not
A profession implies qualifications
It has always been a job
It used to be a sales job when I was an agent
It has become an admin job
Go past any estate agents office and you will see hardly anyone on a phone or with a customer or client
they are all tapping away on a computer
There are no qualifications required other than to own a suit and a pair of shoes

Salaries vary quite dramatically within Estate Agency, as what you earn will depend predominantly on how successful you are. When you start in the industry you will probably be given a guaranteed salary for your first three months; this figure will vary depending upon the employer concerned, the geographical location and how much they value you, but will probably be somewhere between £15,000 and £20,000. Once you come off this guarantee you can expect to earn a basic salary of somewhere between £16,000 and £20,000 (though this could be higher) with commission on top. This commission can either be based on your personal sales figures, or on the office sales figures, or on both. In total, you should earn somewhere between £25,000 and £30,000

Whilst I admit there is a lot of admin, this is a personal service industry.

Not sure what your sniffing today but you have clearly lost the plot. There are many qualifications that agents have and can attain. There are many that are required to be licenced with qualification i.e. in Wales and Scotland. Agents are required to adhere to codes of practice and many conform to the RICS blue bible. Your remarks are an insult to those that have worked hard to achieve them and demonstrates your lack of knowledge when you were apparently an estate agent. That may explain why you are so blinkered anti-agent with many of your posts.
One profession you certainly do not need anything …. property developer.

This wasn’t entertainment, cringing. Jamie Demetriou from ‘Stath Lets Flats’ should be on the programme.
