Who doesn’t like an awards event?
10 grand for a table that’s mostly occupied by your own team as the big ticket guests blew out, cheeky beers beforehand, food like a cheap wedding, clapping for so many awards you cant give a flying rats wotsit by the time the Best Small to Medium Letting Agent in the North East award comes round, nine million sponsors most of which we haven’t heard of but they have high hopes beyond getting home with a pocket full of business cards or in the modern world a bundle of new LinkedIn contacts followed by a couple of quite beers after followed by 11 noisy ones and a Burger King at Euston at horrid o’clock the following morning and missing the train home / losing your Highly Commended award for not quite being good enough.

Ooh you cynic you! Every year I think “should we?” when the inevitable call comes to say we are “one of the best in the country”. Then I receive the rate card and the lovely pics of last year’s glamour-filled gala evening and remind myself why I would rather stick pins in my own eyes.

Shudder, I won an award several decades ago and we were ” treated ” to a bash at the adelphi hotel ( I think ) in Liverpool, my prize along with my framed certificate? An engraved brass ships bell.
