Activists working to mobilise renters’ vote ahead of General Election

Tenant activist group ACORN has launched an online survey in an effort to mobilise the ‘renters’ vote’.

The group is seeking volunteers to take to the streets to ensure renters are on the electoral roll and also wants to use the internet poll to help compile a list of key demands such as ensuring the lettings fee ban goes ahead.

Tenants will have to act fast, though, as the poll closes today (Wednesday) at 7pm.

An email to newsletter subscribers from ACORN said: “ACORN activists around the country – along with Generation Rent and others – are ready to hit the streets to register tenant voters.

“We’re planning mass campaigns to ensure our friends and neighbours use their votes.

“We’re poised to launch online email campaigns on key demands like making sure the Government stick to their word and ban tenancy fees.”

They say 11m people voted for the Conservatives at the 2015 General Election and then use a figure of more than 12m individual renters, claiming they could make the difference.

There are 4.5m households in the private rented sector.
