The Tenancy Deposit Service has overseen 2,550 repayments totalling over £800,000 in returning excess deposits.
From June 1, deposits were capped at a maximum of five weeks rent for tenancies with an annual rent of under £50,000, or six weeks with rents of £50,000 or more.
Where the tenancy is renewed, agents must return the excess.
Debbie Davies at TDS said that repayments have so far totalled £817,031, with the average amount being £320.
The highest repayment was £3,384.
