People who let out spare rooms could lose a valuable tax break, because of concerns over Airbnb.
At the moment, the Government’s rent-a-room scheme means that people who do let out spare rooms can make £7,500 a year in rent before they have to pay any tax.
The tax break becomes even more valuable for those who let out rooms via schemes such as Airbnb, whose users generally charge far higher rents for short-term use.
The Government has now announced a consultation on plans to redesign the scheme to ensure it is better targeted at those letting rooms long-term.
A number of letting agents have recently entered the Airbnb property management market.
Any idea why the gov would want to reduce short-lets? Seems like a good use of space if someone has a spare room.
