Most Scottish tenants ‘happy with their homes’

A huge survey of private tenants in Scotland has shown that the large majority have never had their rents increased during a lease.

In November and December, responses were received from 8,626 people to a survey by Lettingstats, part of Scottish portal Lettingweb.

Of that number, 6,448 were current tenants in the private sector, and the remainder had previously been tenants.

A total of 86% had never received a request for a rent increase during a lease, and 95% felt any requests to vacate a property were reasonable.

Lettingstats said it believes the poll to be “the largest opinion survey of private renting tenants conducted in Scotland or indeed the UK”.

The poll also shows most tenants were happy with the way a rental home is managed by a letting agent or landlord, with 45% judging the management to be quite good and 31.5% saying it had been very good.

However, 13.1% said management had been quite poor and 6% described it as very poor.

The poll comes as Lettingweb statistics show newly advertised rents for two-bedroom homes are up 12.4% annually in Glasgow, 6.7% in Edinburgh and 3.1% in Aberdeen.

The average rent for a two-bedroom home in Scotland is up 8.9% year on year to £664.
