Private rents across Britain rose by 2.3% in the 12 months to August, the ONS price index has reported.
The ‘price index’, which gives no prices as possible evidence of proof, says annual rent inflation went down a marginal 0.1% on a monthly basis.
Private rents in August grew by 2.4% in England, 0.1% in Wales and were unchanged in Scotland.
The region with the highest rent rises was the south east, at 3.4% over the year.
The ONS comments that inflation in the rental market “is likely to have been caused by demand in the market outpacing supply”.
