Propertymark’s decision to invite Angela Rayner, the former housing secretary and deputy prime minister, as a speaker for this year’s Propertymark One event, to be held on 12 June at ExCeL London, is no doubt a “controversial choice”.
That is according to Nathan Emerson, the CEO of Propertymark, with reports indicating that Rayner will receive a £15,000 speaking fee.
The invitation has prompted criticism from some agents, including comments posted on Property Industry Eye in recent days.
Emerson responded earlier this week, setting out the organisation’s rationale. Following further reaction, he has released a video message calling for calm and stating that member feedback indicates agents want to hear from senior political figures involved in housing policy.
During her time as housing secretary, Rayner oversaw major legislative changes affecting the private rented sector, including the Renters’ Rights Act and the Planning and Infrastructure Act, and set a target of delivering 1.5 million new homes in England during the current parliament.
Her appearance comes as housing reform and regulatory change remain central issues for property professionals.
