EYE NEWSFLASH: Boris Johnson to resign as prime minister

Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson is set to resign as Conservative leader today, but hopes to continue serving as prime minister until the autumn on an interim basis while a successor is appointed.

The BBC reports that a race for the new Tory leader will take place this summer, with a new prime minister expected to be instituted by the time of the next Conservative party conference in October.

The news comes after some 50 resignations from the party, including leading cabinet figures such as health secretary Sajid Javid and chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Johnson also sacked his secretary of state for levelling up, Michael Gove, last night, after Gove joined senior colleagues in calling for him to resign.

The news comes following controversy over the prime minister’s handling of misconduct claims against his former deputy chief whip, Chris Pincher, as well as public outrage at the soon to be former PM’s conduct over partygate.

Downing Street has just said that Johnson will make a statement later today.

But Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer is demanding Boris Johnson stand down as PM immediately, saying it is not appropriate that he stay on as caretaker prime minister.

“He needs to go, he can’t cling on,” Starmer said. “His own party has decided it’s time – so they can’t inflict him on the country for the next few months.”

Starmer warns the Tories that if Johnson does not leave, “Labour will, in the national interest, bring a no confidence vote – because this can’t go on”.

“The change we need is not just at the top, we need a change of government. We need a Labour government,” he added.

Anyone else just not care anymore…? I mean it’s sooo tiring listening to the lies, the f-ups. Is it too much to ask for that after the last few years we can’t, for once, have some peace and normality…
