New TV sitcom about agents starts tonight – but is lettings a funny old business?

Channel 4 is airing a new comedy tonight (Wednesday) called Stath Lets Flats, focusing on an incompetent letting agent played by Jamie Demetriou.

Working for his dad at the family business Michael & Eagle, Stath struggles not to be outshone by the firm’s top agent, ruthlessly ambitious Carole, while the company struggles against the threat of ‘Smethwicks’ – the slick, high-end estate agents next door.

As far as we know there is no mention of fee bans or Right to Rent checks, but C4 has used the launch of the series to highlight how the public views letting agents.

It found that one in ten adults wouldn’t date a letting agent – which of course means that nine in ten would.

The poll of 2,000 adults found that 9% of renters in London would live without any windows or natural light if it meant they could have a 25% reduction in their rent, while one in four said they would live without central heating to pay less. Again, it just seems to prove that the large majority of renters would insist on having windows and central heating.

Asked about how they find rental property, 49% said they would use an online-only letting agency.

The survey also revealed some odd viewings experiences, with one respondent describing “a toilet in a kitchen with no walls around it”.

Another said they were viewing a property while the existing tenant “followed us around the house not speaking, then he sniffed my hair as we left”.

Seems like Stath could have his work cut out for him if these real life experiences are anything to go by. Anyway, we’ll be watching.

Are you meaning on the TV show, the twitching heap I have beaten up to get the remote off, or some over-paid wuss on the football field?
