Mark Hayward to retire from NAEA Propertymark

Chief Executive of NAEA Propertymark, Mark Hayward has announced that he intends to retire from the organisation at the end of the year.

Hayward has been Chief Executive of the estate agent’s division of Propertymark for seven years, having previously been a board member and chair of the board for four years.

During his tenure he has been instrumental in the creation and establishment of the Propertymark brand, with its emphasis on consumer protection and the need for a single voice to represent the interests of the property industry.

Hayward has represented members across a huge range of issues to both Government and the media, most recently advocating for business rate relief for estate agents and the inclusion of commission within furlough calculations to support members impacted by Covid-19.

He has long called for sector regulation and was an integral part of the Regulation of Property Agents Working Group, which was formed by MHCLG and chaired by Lord Best, to advise Government on how to make regulation of property agents a reality.

Christopher Hamer, Executive Chair of Propertymark said:

“The Propertymark Board would like to thank Mark for his significant contribution over many years to NAEA and the development of Propertymark as a brand.

“He has been the first port of call for both media and Government departments seeking to understand how the property sector works and the implications of emerging legislation for the sector.

“He has also, importantly, engaged fully with members, advising them about new laws and supporting them through the many changes and difficult times, not the least during the Covid-19 lockdown, that the sector has experienced.

“And as Chairman, I offer my personal best wishes.”

Mark Hayward said:

“I’ve loved leading an organisation that spans so many important issues; housing really is at the heart of everything and it’s been a real pleasure to represent the industry.

“I am ready for new challenges.  I want to thank colleagues and members for all their support over the years and look forward to seeing Propertymark as it evolves in a new era of regulation.”

“Following the rebranding exercise in 2017 and the adoption of both NAEA Propertymark and ARLA Propertymark, the Board has decided to take the opportunity to move towards a single Propertymark structure.

“As such the Board has decided to commence a process to identify and appoint a Chief Executive Officer for Propertymark Ltd, with the successful candidate to commence in post in 2021.”

Mark Hayward’s influence over the UK property industry, and those of us who work in it, will sustain long beyond his 7 years in office.
For the membership, he has always been ‘there’ – making himself personally accessible to a membership of thousands, constantly reminding us to ‘call me or email mark@naea.co.uk‘. Always seeking the views of the membership, what we want him and Propertymark to do, collectively and individually, he keeps abreast of the mood of the members and translates that into actions and influences policy.
Mark is probably the first and only person representing our industry to have created and sustained a strong and persuasive relationship with government, despite a revolving door of housing ministers and the morphing of MHCLG into what it is today. He is the first call civil servants and ministers make for input on any matter concerning UK housing or estate agency.
His views, representing the thousands of Propertymark members he speaks to up and down the country every week, are constructive and influential in forming policy, to improve the experience of property agency in this country. He has persuaded government to take the property industry seriously, and to start the process of bringing in measures which will drive for higher standards, so that consumers can enjoy a better experience, cowboys get squeezed out, and our ‘industry’ becomes a recognised profession.
His legacy will continue with ROPA, regulation & qualification, and the drive for higher standards. The final stage of ARLA and NAEA becoming united as ‘Propertymark’ will only strengthen the voice and influence of us as property agents in UK, be it lettings, sales or both. I know I am amongst many who will congratulate Mark on his achievements, and his successor knows they will have a tough act to follow.

You fail to mention the wholesale demolition of the NAEA branch structure and removal of access to meeting members’ peers on a regular basis. All the current meetings are “presentations” severely limiting dialogue and interaction between the members and those “running” the association. The loss of the branch structure has been catastrophic for the cooperation and interaction between the members all over the country. NAEA is no longer a “member” organisation run by the members, now just following actions by an unaccountable board. He has removed any real form of accountability as to his or the board’s actions. It is a great shame. Yes there at are plenty of events but none really for members to meet and interact amongst themselves. What happened to all the member run NAEA with committees, Branch meetings, Council, Homelink, Propertylive, Members Advisory Forum.  I know it is difficult in these times but the AGM was a non event with not one single question raised – members fault I know but I imagine everyone just thought – why bother! It is definately time for change

All sadly true Newsboy. For some time now the only interest served by the organisation has been the organisation itself.

You really don’t have to overdo the praise like that, Mrs Hayward.
