Look at allAgents before making rental decisions, councillor tells tenants

A Labour councillor has advised prospective tenants to check out allAgents before deciding whether to go with a particular agency.

Cllr Tracey Hill, of Brighton and Hove Council, said she recommends the site because it is fully moderated and only genuine customers can leave reviews.

She said: “AllAgents has been running for ten years and carries reviews by tenants as well as landlords (and clients of sales agents as well).

“We want to encourage people to use this site and leave reviews of their experiences.

“At the moment some agents in the city have a good number of ratings but many only have a handful.

“This is despite the fact that there are thousands of people renting in this city.

“We would really like to grow awareness of allAgents and see the number of reviews go up, so that letting agents can be evaluated in a fair and independent way.

“AllAgents is industry-specific, it’s fully moderated, only genuine customers of the agent can leave reviews, and agents also have a right to reply.

“AllAgents has co-operated with us to ensure that all possible letting agents in the city are listed on the site.”

Cllr Hill, writing in her local paper, said: “The experiences of people renting privately in Brighton and Hove have been a concern for some time.

“Around a third of housing in the city is privately rented, and while many people have a good experience of renting, there is evidence of not-so-good experiences: poorly maintained properties, bad service and sharp practices.

“While there is good information out there for tenants, many are not aware of it and only begin to reach out after things have started to go wrong.”

She said that the council had considered setting up its own ratings site before deciding to recommend allAgents.

Genuine reviews from your competitors I think she means. Anyone can leave a review on all agents and most of the good reviews are from the agents themselves trying to win competitions which encorouges agents to write fake reviews for themselves.

Well done councillor. Misleading you consitiuancy!!

This is the worst possible advice you could give any prospective tenant. We are all aware that reviews are put on by competitors to distract customers from other agents. What ever happened to Labour councillors promoting the benefits of council housing ?

I have always found the best review site is TripAdvisor as people log in via facebook, you can see the reviews (and the number) they have made across a spectrum of services.  I used it for hotels and restaurants, and find it pretty accurate

All agents is open to massive abuse by staff and as others have mentioned competitors.

No doubt good intentions but clearly didn’t do her homework before recommending someone. Looks good, but is it? Just like her politics!
