A landlord has been hit with a bill of nearly £6,000 after failing to obey an order to repair a property.
Robert Emery had been ordered to do work on the flat back in 2013.
Last November, Emery was fined £12,000 after letting properties with no working toilets and dangerous electrics.
Medway Council in Kent took him back to court after officers found he had done little to the flat in Chatham.
Problems included lack of insulation which made the property cold, inadequate water supply, defective windows and a lack of fire precautions.
The council had been given assurances by agency Hilton Taylor, acting on Emery’s behalf, that the work would be carried out.
Emery was fined £3,500 by Medway Magistrates and ordered to pay costs of £2,314 after he was found guilty of five offences of failing to comply with an improvement notice under the Housing Act 2004.
Medway Council’s portfolio holder for housing and community services, Cllr Howard Doe, said: “This landlord clearly has no respect for the wellbeing of his tenants and no regard for the law.
“This prosecution sends out a clear message to those few rogue landlords who flout the law that they will not get away with it.
“Sadly, a small minority of landlords believe they can do what they want but we are robust in dealing with these issues and will continue to do so.”

Thank you councilor Howard Doe of Medway for acknowledging the majoirty of landlords are decent unlike Rogue Council Croydon who demonise landlords by whole borough licensing.

So the Council have dealt with this particular landlord, albeit very slowly – does it really have to take from 2013 to 2015 to resolve when the property is in such an awful and dangerous condition?
