Agents who complete Ironman challenges in aid of charity are almost routine in this generous industry.
But here is a truly inspirational example.
Two years ago, negotiator Eddy Clarkson spent his 21st birthday in hospital in isolation as he went through seven months of treatment for leukaemia.
He has now just completed the Ironman UK challenge to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust – “the charity that saved my life”.
The challenge involved a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile cycle ride and a marathon.
Clarkson, a sales negotiator for RM English in York, said that his diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia came as a huge shock.
Treatment in the Teenage Cancer Trust ward at St James in Leeds included four rounds of chemotherapy, over six weeks in hospital, and ten days in the high dependency unit after he contracted E.coli.
At the end of his treatment he had lost 25kg in weight and was so weak he could barely get up and down stairs.
However, he worked hard to get his fitness back, determined to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
He ran his first marathon in May, but then decided to challenge himself with an Ironman challenge “because it is the ultimate mental and physical challenge”.
He said: “I want to prove to myself and others that if you have the will and the determination, you can succeed at anything”.
Clarkson has set himself the target of raising £10,000 and has so far raised nearly £8,000.
