The number of properties John D Wood & Co. exchanged on last month hit a record high.
The agency, which is owned Countrywide, says that activity in the residential property market was boosted by the stamp duty holiday, reflected by the fact that the number of properties John D Wood & Co. exchanged on in June 2021 surpasses the combined month of June results over the last three years.
This adds to the success the business announced in January – reporting their best trading result in five years with sales outperforming 2019 figures, despite an unprecedented year.
Polly Ogden Duffy, managing director at John D Wood & Co. and associated brands, commented, “Our new sales agreed are still 25% higher than the same period in 2019 – and despite the knowledge that the stamp duty deadline wouldn’t be met for these home movers this indicates the strength of the market, at least in the short term.”
However, in parts of prime central London, including Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, results have not shown any real difference in transaction numbers across previous years, indicating that the stamp duty holiday has had no noteworthy effect on the more expensive postcodes.
Duffy added: “A combination of property prices increasing and pent-up demand accumulated throughout the pandemic, suggests that the domestic market remains confident and still highly competitive. Once the travel corridors truly re-open, the impact of the international buyer is really the one to watch.”
Does make me giggle first thing every morning. Errr we all had a record, unprecedented, mad, June 2021.

I think its quite sweet this press release – no real numbers, just a 25% figure, desperate to get in on the act. Memo to JDW – if you want to be taken seriously then a) publish figures that mean something, b) do it consistently. If you just put your head above the parapet when you’ve had a good month then nobody will care. (And I say this as someone with admiration for the old JDW brand)
