The Home Office does not record the number of people in this country illegally who have been deported or absconded after having been allowed to live in private rental accommodation.
The revelation has come in a written answer to a question in Parliament.
Andrew Rosindell (Conservative) had asked how many migrants who had not been granted entry or temporary admission were allowed to live in private accommodation before absconding or being deported in (a) 2014 and (b) 2015.
Immigration minister James Brokenshire has replied: “The Home Office does not record the number of persons who have been deported or who have absconded having been permitted to live in private accommodation.
“The Right to Rent scheme denies illegal migrants access to the private rented sector.
“It has been in operation in parts of the west midlands since 1st December 2014, and across England since 1st February 2016.
“The scheme requires landlords to carry out checks on prospective tenants before they rent property to them, and to refuse a tenancy to anyone who cannot show that they have the right to rent.
“The scheme is not retrospective, and does not apply to tenancies which were in place before the scheme came into effect in the relevant area.
“Therefore, in order to keep the scheme light touch and in line with the Right to Work scheme, landlords (like employers) are not required to tell the Home Office when they have completed Right to Rent checks.”
“light touch” I think Mr Brokenshire is deluded this legislation can criminalize landlords (despite advising me it would not). What the conservative party says and does are two different things! Another example of their claims were “immigration will be down to the 10,000’s” I suppose they would justify it by saying 360,000 is tens of thousands in fact 36 times tens of thousands!
It is shame their in no honesty or integrity any more. The new London mayor is no better with his distortion on fare capping. It is all to get your vote.

Just as agents are not compelled to inform the Authorities if they find an applicant/illegal immigrant does not have the Right to Rent. Typical lack of joined-up thinking by the muppet civil servants and ministers
