Green Party pledge to push for rent controls

Sian Berry, the Green mayoral candidate for London, has issued her manifesto.

In it, she promises to push for rent controls.

The Green Party would “shake up the private rented sector by setting up a renters’ union to help tenants help themselves against rogue landlords and letting agents”.

The union could support tenants taking legal action, undertake secret shopping of letting agents not complying with the law or racially discriminating against tenants, and set up a landlord register.

The Greens would also establish an anonymous hotline for renters to report discrimination, whether this is based on their employment status, nationality or ethnicity.

There needs to be some kind of regulation for rents but this is not the answer.
