Government spends £3m on smoke and carbon alarms to give to landlords

The Government is to spend £3m on giving out smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for private rented homes.

The move follows the announcement that the alarms will become mandatory in all private rental homes from October 10.

Fire minister Penny Mordaunt said that new funding will provide around 445,000 smoke and 40,000 carbon monoxide alarms.

These will be free from the 46 fire and rescue authorities in England to distribute to private landlords at their discretion.
