Anger as ‘sexist’ estate agent advert shows trophy woman draped over ‘period property’

An estate agent’s advert has been condemned on social media and has become the object of six complaints to the advertising watchdog.

The tube advert, by LSL brand Marsh & Parsons, is now withdrawn after the protests.

It showed an apparent trophy wife draped over the shoulder of a much older man.

The wording said: “A charming period property with a modern extension.”

Marsh & Parsons says it will now withdraw the advert after Twitter reaction.

One person said: ““How did @MarshandParsons estate agents miss 2nd half of 20th c & 21st c? What sexist stereotypes. #everydaysexism”

Another said: “Think their website’s wrong. Should say “‘UK Estate Agency of the Year’ 1976” @marshandparsons

Yet another said it was a case of estate agents living up to their “sleazy” images.

However, Marsh & Parsons chief executive David Brown said:  “Marsh & Parsons has a recent history of tongue-in-cheek advertisements that compare people to property and reflect that the range of people we work with are as diverse as the types of properties we sell and let.

“We have always tried to get our message across with a gentle sense of humour and up until now, our work has been extremely well-received.

“We have featured a varied mixture of men and women across various cultures and ages and have never sought to alienate or insult anybody.

“The campaign, created by a team of men and women, is designed to be thought-provoking and to prompt conversation, but it was not our intention to cause offence.

“It would appear that this particular advert – taken apart from the rest of the campaign – has done so and we will be taking steps to remove it as a result.”

A spokeswoman for the ASA said: “We’ve received six complaints about the Marsh & Parsons ad which are currently being assessed.”

People were offended by this but not the PB advert stating that you don’t have to pay a commission… wow.

I think it’s now over three weeks since CIELA wrote to PB about their advertising. Has anyone heard what the reply was? Is CIELA following up with further steps? Does anyone know?

If the catchline had been different such as ‘with a lovely outlook’ would people still have objected to it? is it the picture or the wording?

I like the ad! Think it’s great and it is a fantastic visual.

Get over it – it’s not even sexist.

Or to quote the daily mail.

“Never mind Brexit, it’s Legs it” Todays main headline !!!!

So if it’s OK for the daily mail then I don’t see what harm there is with this advert.

Obviously plenty but the daily mail ?

6 complain yet thousands must have seen it.  If one person complains does that mean an advert is offensive?

Did you hear there was 150 complaints about inappropriate content on Children in Need! These people should voice their opinion when they have raised £73m for charities and good causes!

If the charming period property had been an older lady with a toy boy modern extension how many complaints would they have had then?

Go on M&P you simply have to go for it.

MP as an LSL shareholder, I beg you not to cancel this advertisement, just because six complained. Six out of a potential target audience of many millions should not allow the tail to wag the dog.

My wife would be the first to admit that she is a feminist, but also says that these poor little wimps are the minority and are actually doing more harm for women than they realise. By all means complain if there is a serious reason, but this is just another example of stupidity by ignorant sado’s.

Please change your minds and stick up for common sense and reason.

Maybe I missed it, and I did only skim this piece, but where does the ad say they are a couple rather than perhaps father and daughter ?
